Teaching Students with Emotional Disturbances
Signs of a student who may have emotional disturbances (What to look for)
Ongoing Issues with personal relationships

Immaturity - inappropriate crying, temper tantrums, poor coping skills.

Explore feelings through use of play
Encourage group work/collaborative play
Explore feelings through use of play
Explore feelings through writing or conversation
2X10 Strategy - 2 minutes a day for 10 days, students write about/discuss a topic of interest.
Locked Journals - a safe place to express feelings.
Set clear behavioral rules and expectations
Do this for the entire class
When dealing with conflicts, explain what happened in as few words as possible, in a calm, non-angry voice
Explain your reasons for rules and their consequences
Model the benefits of cooperation
Assistive Technologies that can help/encourage students
Point sheets to encourage positive behavior
Behavior Charts
Use music to calm students down
Try sensorimotor multimedia programs like MeMoves or even Tai Chi
Learn About Your Student's Specific Mental Health Disturbance
Research how it manifests itself and how it might be treated
Communicate with the parents
Get suggestions for what might help the student at school
Keep yourself informed on developments in the student's personal lfe
Learn about new medication the student might be on
Support them emotionally
Join or get involved with the student's IEP (Individualized Education Plan)
Learn about accommodations student will receive from IEP in class or during testing
If necessary, advocate for modifications in accomodations
Keep in regular contact with all members of the IEP
