If I was an Uber driver, I would charge by distance because displacement can sometimes be zero if it is a round trip so you would make zero dollars. The longer you drive, the farther you go, so you would make more money.

If I was a Uber driver, I would charge distance because you are going to charge according to the miles/distance covered. But displacement is both magnitude and direction, so when we consider distance we do not have to consider which direction I would drive the passenger.
