Enzymes and Digestion
Digestive enzymes break down big molecules into smaller ones
Starch, proteins and fats- big and insoluble
Sugars, amino acids, glycerol, fatty acids- small and soluble
Digestive enzymes break down big to small
Amylase converts STARCH into MALTOSE then MALTASE converts MALTOSE into GLUCOSE
PROTEASES convert PROTEINS into AMINO ACIDS
LIPASES convert LIPIDS into GLYCEROL and FATTY ACIDS
Bile Neutralises the stomach acids and emulsifies fats
Bile is produced in the liver
Bile is stored in the gall bladder
The bile in the gall bladder is released into the small intestine
Bile is alkaline- neutralises the acid
Bile also emulsifies fat
Breaks down the fat- digest faster
Food is moved through the gut by PERISTALSIS
Muscular tissue all the way down the alimentary canal
It squeezes balls of food through your gut
Peristalsis
Squeezing action which is waves of circular muscle contractions
