Food Tests
Benedicts Test (Glucose)
1) Transfer a food sample to a test tube
2) Prepare a 75 degrees water bath
3) Add some benedicts solution
4) Place the test tube in the water for 5 mins
Normal Glucose colour: BLUE
Turns GREEN/YELLOW in low concentrations of glucose
Turns BRICK RED in high concentrations of glucose
Iodine Solution (Starch)
1) Transfer a food sample into a test tube
2) Add a few drops of iodine solution and shake gently
Original colour: BROWNY-ORANGE
Turns BLACK/BLUE-BLACK if starch is present
Biuret Test (Proteins)
1) Transfer a food sample to a test tube
2) Add some biuret solution and gently shake
Original Colour: BLUE
Turns PINK/PURPLE if protein is present
Sudan III (Lipids)
1) Transfer a food sample to a test tube
2) Add some Sudan III stain solution and gently shake
If lipids is present the sample will split into 2 LAYERS and the top layer will be RED
