former author

the city is destroyed

planning to rebuild an new and literate society

he meets Clarisse

sees the world with other eyes

feels trapped with Mildred who doesn't want to acknowledge the truth

since little, her family teached her how to have an independent thought

no celebrations (less emotions)

celebrations

the government gained control of society by telling people what to think

people needed to conform to what the government said was right

this discouraged individual thought

they got rid of books so that later on people wouldn´t protest

some people did not conform, but the people who chose to do it was such a vast majority that some of the non-conformist like Faber gave in and didn't do something about it.

people were afraid of getting killed or getting their house burned.

Hearth

Salamander

fireplace

traditional symbol of the home

vertebrate

traditional symbol of the firemen

Both of them

involve fire

this is the name of first chapter, when Montag declares the pleasure he feels when he burns

(belief) it lives in fire

Montag´s childhood memory

he tried to fill a sieve with sand

he compares this to his attempt of memorising the Bible in less than a day

if he reads fast enough, some of it will stay in his memory

after a failed attempt, he goes to Faber,s house to seek answers

they talk and plan what Montag is going to do to start a rebellion

this leads to Beatty´s death and persecution

Phoenix

j

Granger brings up this metaphor

mythical bird

it means that mankind is like a phoenix that burns itself up and then rises up from the ashes as a reborn bird.

remember the mistakes of the past

it also refers to Montag´s resurrection

then they reach the city and the book ends

he loved seeing fire eating things up and leaving ashes on its behind

Montag starts developing a hatred against firemen

This happens when the old lady is burnt alive inside her house with her books

After this event Montag is traumatized

this leads to an unwise decision of stealing a book

that causes Beatty to give in a speech about history of books

all of this spark a rebellion between Montag and society

at this moment, Montag has killed Beatty

he uses Beatty´s words against him

Montag recognizes he wasn't even happy when he said he was

he has stolen books before but never had to courage to read them

this means he didn't love his job not even at the beginning of the novel

he had the courage thanks to Clarisse and the old lady

when Montag is in the other side of the river, he had already deflected the Mechanical Hound

he said this in the last chapter when he was spying on Granger

he learn that fire isn't bad depending on how you use it

factors that lead to the censorship of books

lack of interest from the readers

people felt offended with content the books contained

the television and radio appeared

people no longer care about books

it was easier to received the information right away rather than read it and analyze it

advertisements

"...drivers don't know what grass is, or flowers, because they never see them slowly." (p.9)

jet cars

Dehamns Dentrifice

doesn´t allow Montag to concentrate on his reading

Meanwhile, everyone else is singing and tapping to the commercial, Montag is frustrated because he can´t focus on his reading.

its only him who has this problem because he is the only one trying to think, meanwhile, the others are just repeating what they are hearing

"You must understand that our civilization is so vast that we can´t have our minorities upset and stirred" (p.59)

people don't like to feel inferior than others

since people that read more know more, people felt dumb next to them, therefore, unhappy

for this reason, if nobody read, everyone was equal

"Not everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal." (p.58)

with this said, Beatty explains that we live to be happy and have fun so we can´t allow a book destroy our happiness

"Colored people dont like Little Black Sambo. Burn it...Serenity, Montag. Peace, Montag." (p.59)

fireman´s work is to promote ignorance and eliminate knowledge

Beatty

promotes equality

equalizes the population

although he is full of knowledge he promotes ignorance since it is what he wants to believe

promotes knowledge

Clarisse

Faber

Granger

former author

he knows everything that needs to be know about books

former professor

coward but tries the best he can to help Montag in his attempt of rebellion

her family, especially her uncle, teach clarisse how to think and appreciate nature

she transfers this knowledge to Montag

TV

Replaces intellectualism, literature and independent thinking

substitutes friendship, family and any kind of relationship.

people have conversations with the TV and they absorb everything that is given

it supposedly brings "happiness to people

people are happy when they dont think, therefore, they dont worry

for this mean, technology is what the government uses to oppress its citizens

people strongly believe in the rules the government has set

people always do what they are told

opposite of a non-conformist

Montag after he meets Clarisse

Clarisse

Mrs. Bowles

after hearing Montag´s poem she is upset and angry. this is because she is a conformist and thinks having a book is wrong. This is because she strongly believes in the government´s wishes

Beatty

he tries to convince Montag that reading is a dangerous thing and he should avoid it

he modified the Mechanical Hound to send a warning to Montag so that he gets that reading is poisonous

Mildred

turns Montag in

does not like the idea of reading forbidden books with her husband

people who question things are view as threats

heats home
