5.1-Principles of Verbal Messages
Message Meanings Are in People
People will usually have their own meanings for words or phrases based on their previous experiences. For example a person that has been in a bad relationship might have a different meaning for the word "love" than a person currently in a happy relationship.
Meanings Are Denotative and Connotative
Sometimes people will have a more emotional meaning behind certain words based on their own life. For a doctor death means that someones heart has stopped, while for a parent it could mean that they have lost their child.
Messages Can Be Onymous or Anonymous
Some people when giving a message might prefer to be left anonymous for various reasons, this can be seen on a lot of anonymous message boards all over the internet. These messages could be hurtful in nature, or they could be helpful, depending on the person. On the other hand some like to be known for what they have said, such as a lot of authors or journalists.
Message Meanings Vary in Abstraction
Some words or phrases might have a more abstract meaning to them than others. Words such as entertainment or film cover a fairly general concept. While a specific genre is a lot less abstract as it covers a more narrow subset of the other concepts.
Message Meanings Vary in Politeness
Messages can vary in politeness depending on who is talking to who, friends at work might give each other compliments while random people online might talk shit about each other for no real reason. The way people usually interact with others can be influenced by their cultural teachings, some cultures might teach a way of speaking that others might find more abrasive than their own.
Messages Vary in Immediacy
People usually like others that give them a sense of immediacy, as this can make them more exciting or entertaining to be around. This can be given off through both verbal and nonverbal channels, and can make you seem more attractive to others around you so they might want to stick around you.
Messages Can Deceive
People usually assume that others are telling the truth but this is not always the case, they might be lying to protect some secret that they do not want others to know about, or they might just be addicted to lying. Culture can have an impact on how people lie, but usually people view lying to people outside their own group or culture as being less bad than lying to their own members.
Message Meanings Vary in Assertiveness
Some messages will express your real thoughts more than others, regardless of if they might get you in an argument with others around you. These might be about some issue that you care more deeply about, or just how you feel about something. People that are more assertive will generally express their feelings more frankly and openly to people around them, and operate under a "I win, you win" philosophy.
