ROME AND HER NEIGHBOURS
ETRUSCANS
- at one point, had a loose federation of citystates ruled by Etruscan kings
- eventually developed an oligarchy (like Greece + rome)
- ETRUSCAN N O T related to other indo-european languages
- did NOT have any writings, but many writings about them
seen as strange/'barbaric'/exotic to others, maybe even promiscuous. hairless w/ many lovers! partying and eating dinner, men + women together, homosexual relationships. FIERCE ETRUSCAN WOMEN
Etruscan women in the story of LUCRETIA seen as less desirable bc of feasting with each other, partying
TANAQUIL
- etruscan women seen as being able to read omens, capable of augurey
- etruscan w/ foreigner husband, saw omen that meant husband would be king
succeeded emperor by becoming friends w/ him, elected out of popularity
saw omen that meant son, servius tullius, would be king -- when husband died HID his death, installing servius as temporary king

- last queen of Rome, daughter of Servius Tullius
- encouraged Tarquinius (husband) to take throne
- gathered senatorial approval + took throne, had Servius killed on the front steps
ran over her father's body with a carriage, cursed by household gods to have a bad reign
STATUS + ETRUSCANS
women + men seen as equals, focus on families and couples instead of mother vs. father, no inequality in potrayal
women shown to be wealthy, to have more freedom than the greeks
women depicted as light skinned, men as dark skinned
buried with cosmetic boxes (cistae) and spindle whorls, maybe implying an association w/ beauty, 'motherhood'/home/craft. every women wove wool!
depiction of women emphasizing role as mothers, like clay figures of mothers nursing infants, dancing figures
had upper vs lower classes, slaves, women did not have political power but certainly had the power to influence their husbands -- seen as instigators

porsenna admired her physical prowess and bravery, let her have half the hostages -- she took the boys instead of the girls so that they could continue fighting, herself < state
erected statue of her on a horse, usually reserved for men -- she's up there with other early heroes of the republic who are men
more to be an example/inspiration to men to SURPASS HER, not to be a role model to women
