Epidemiology
"The production of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in response to exposure to allergens" (Hammer & McPhee, 2014, p. 229).
Pathophysiology
"During an acute exacerbation of asthma, airway inflammation and obstruction worsen and potentially becoming life threatening. This respiratory functionality rapidly deteriorates and the airway lumen becomes occluded by mucus plugging composed of plasma proteins and glycoproteins" (Hazeldine, 2013, p. 44).
