Distinguish Between Disconfirmation and Confirmation, and Provide Examples of appropriate cultural Identifiers
Disconfirmation: a communication pattern in which you ignore someone's presence as well as that person's communications
Rejection: in this pattern, you acknowledge you disagree with the person; you indicate your unwillingness to accept something the the other person says or does
Confirmation: you not only acknowledge the presence of the other person but also indicate your acceptance of this person, of this person's self-
definition, and of your relationship as defined or viewed by this other person
Racism: The negative attitudes and beliefs that individuals or whole societies hold about specific ethnic groups
Institutionalized racism: Is seen in organizational behaviors such as de facto school segregation, the reluctance of corporations to hire members of minority groups...
Racist Language: is used by members of one culture to disparage members of other cultures, their customs, or their accomplishments
Individual racism: Consists of negative attitudes and beliefs that people hold about specific races or ethnic groups
Avoid
-
Including reference to race when it's irrelevant, as in referring to "an African American surgeon" or "an Asian athlete"
-
Attributing economic or social problems to the race of individuals rather than to institutionalized racism or to general economic problems that affect everyone
Heterosexism
Heterosexist Language: Includes derogatory terms used for lesbians and gay men
Avoid
Avoid offensive nonverbal mannerisms that parody stereotypes when talking about gay men and lesbians
-
Avoid making the assumption that every gay or lesbian knows what every other gay or lesbian is thinking
Avoid over-attribution, the tendency to attribute just about everything a person does, says, and believes to the fact that the person is gay or lesbian. This tendency helps to activate and perpetuate stereotypes
-

Institution Heterosexism: happens in society and culture such as the bans on gay marriage that once existed in the U.S, illegal homosexual relations...
Individual Heterosexism: Refers to attitudes, behaviors, and language that disparage gay men and lesbians and in the belief that all sexual behavior that is not heterosexual is unnatural and deserving of criticism and condemnation
Ageism: Discrimination based on age and also comes in individual and institutionalized forms
