Message Meaning Are in People
You recognize the change and the change in meaning that you created out of past messages
Meaning Are Denotative and Connotative
Denotative- refers to the meaning you'd find in a dictionary, the objective or descriptive aspect of a word's meaning
Connotation- is the emotional meaning that specific speakers/ listeners give to a word
Messages Can Be Onymous or Anonymous
Onymous messages are "signed", that is, the author of the message is clearly identified
Anonymous messages are those for which the author is not identified
Message Meaning Vary in Abstraction
Abstraction or general concept- entertainment
A verbal message that uses entertainment conjure up many different images in listeners minds
Message Meanings Vary in Politeness
Polite messages reflect positively on other person and respect the others person's right to independent and autonomous
Impolite messages attack our needs to be seen positively and be autonomous
Messages Vary in Immediacy
Immediacy is the creation of closeness, a sense of togetherness, of oneness
Messages Can Deceive
Lying refers to the act of sending messages with the intention of giving another person information you believe to be false
Liars hold back- take longer to respond to questions and generally give lass information and elaboration
Liars make less sense- contain more discrepancies and more inconsistencies
Liars give a more negative impression- less willing to be cooperative, smile less than truth-tellers, and more defensive
Liars are tense- higher-pitched voice, excessive body movement
Message Meanings Vary in Assertiveness
Assertive messages- express your real thoughts- even if they involve disagreeing or arguing with others- but are nevertheless respectful of the other person
