Health and Wellbeing: Case Study
Katie, Aged 6
Bed Wetting
Healthy children aren't physically and emotionally ready to start using a potty until they are between 18 months and 3 years old. Although, Katie is already 6.
It isn't a psychological problem or the case of child being lazy to get out bed, this could be anxiety
Some causes of bed wetting include the following: 1. Genetic Factors 2.Hormonal Factors 3.Difficulties waking up from sleep 4.Slower than normal development of the nervous system
Overweight/Obese
Katie only aged 6 was noted as borderline obese when she was weighed and measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme when she was in Reception
Katie inherits bad eating habits like her mum
Katies mum was very upset about this as she has had trouble losing weight herself.
Katies mum also has Post Natal Depression
Post natal depression is a type of depression that many parents experience after having a baby
Symptoms can include:
a persistent feeling of sadness and low mood
lack of energy and feeling tired all the time
lack of enjoyment and loss of interest in the wider world
trouble sleeping at night
difficulty bonding with your baby
Katie Dad has a heart condition
How will this effect a 6 year old?
Ben, Aged 14
Difficulties in school such as unexplained absence on several occasions
Also, has friends who he hangs out late at night and is often back later than Becky wants.
"Spending a lot of time in his room online"
This could be distraction for him and isolating himself could be his coping mechanism.
Ben has limited contact with his real father but is very close to 'Harry' and see's him as a 'dad'
Harry has a heart condition
Due to Harry being ill, maybe hanging out with friends late at night is a replacement for the time being
Remember about gender relationship: How Ben might look up to Harry as a same gender role model but is finding hard to cope as he's not around at home. Also, overthinking Ben could be doing about Harry's wellbeing and if he's getting better or not
Becky, Mum
Becky is pregnant with a third child and already has 2 other children
You could argue that having a baby on the way and already having two with issues influencing health and well being is a lot to handle for any mother
Has post natal depression
A type of depression that many parents experience after having a baby
Treatments for Becky's Post Natal Depression: - Self help: Things you can try yourself include talking to your family and friends about how your feel and what they can do to help. Also, making time for yourself. Doing things you enjoy, resting whenever you get the chance and eating a healthy diet
Psychological therapy: Becky's doctor could recommend a self-help course or may refer her to a course of therapy such as ' Cognitive Behavioural Therapy '.
Harry's heart condition
Since Harry has been unwell she's been very low and anxious about everything as she needs support too. She can't do it on her own
