Differentiated Instruction in my art classroom (if only my classroom was big enough to accommodate all of this!)
Different places to sit and work for students who have a hard time sitting in their seats :
Different ways to present a topic
bean bag chairs with drawing boards
easels for students who want to stand and work
a quiet corner for those students who like to work when it's quiet
Nooks for students who want to block out distractions
Tables with wheels that can be moved around for group work or large scale projects
Visual aids :
posters
videos about a techniques, concept, or artist
worksheets with steps outlined to complete a large project
artwork examples
groups of tables for students who want to talk quietly while working
I show them the steps of completing a project by working along with the students
Resources for drawing a certain object
Identifying a struggling student in art ⚠ ⚠
They refuse to complete their work
They say they completed their work, but they won't show it to me or they forgot it in their locker. They're embarrassed about how it looks.
They skip class or show up late
Once I do see it, I complement them on the good things I see and ask them to try to add the new concept to their existing work. ✅
I try to build their confidence ✅
They rip or crumple up their paper or ruin their project on purpose
Techniques to get them out of their funk
Have them do the project one step at a time and show it to me before they move on.
This insures that they understand the concept before they invest a lot of time into the project
It builds confidence because they get positive feedback throughout the project
If students learn best by having their peers show them a process, group those students together
Giving the student a choice: If they are creating a report about an artist, they get to choose how they present the material. Encourage them to use their strengths. :
Create posters and other visual aids
Make a video about the artist's life
Write a poem or song about the artist
Create a painting using the artists personal style
