User-centred Design
Functional
Its important to ensure that all structures are functional not only to the students and staff but also to the environment.
Teachers can use the area to prepare for classes, gathering samples of the flora, ground and water.
-
Aesthetic
Not much aesthetic features can be involved in the process of these structures as only certain materials can be placed by the river as flooding does occur often (high tides etc.). But what can be included is the design of the map and signage pieces.
The map of the river precinct will highlight all tracks/pathways along with the entrance and exit. A compass of NESW (North, East, South, West) will also be displayed on the map to give a sense of direction to go. The map will also highlight key areas with signage/structures and all of this will have a Legend on the side explaining what colour of highlight is what.
Trends
Trends will be based around the structures that will be placed within the area of the river precinct: kiosk, seating, signage and deck platforms.,
Age
The main purpose of utilising the river precinct is to involve everyone at the college to go down and experience another side of the college that isn't available to everyone.
-
-
Social
The river precinct is currently unutilised and would be a great environment to create social interactions along with the benefit of being hands on with classes and assignments involving the work of nature.
All the structures that will take place will either help the students and staff learn about the different species that live among and along the river but also a place where students and staff can gather and have a social interaction.
Kiosk displaying a map/chart of the area will contain a legend of the different spots were seating will be, signage of all flora and fauna and possibly a deck platform.
Safety
Due to the school being situated right next to the Logan River it is important to ensure the safety of the students and staff along with the ecosystem that lives by it. This means that all structures that get built along the river needs to be environmentally friendly, gates need to be able to keep students out when unsupervised by a staff member and signage to let students know the effects of harming the flora and fauna by the river.
-
Signage of all flora and fauna within the river precinct for students and staff to be mindful of and help protect.
-
Economic
Due to the structures that will be placed by the river which is prone to king tides and flooding its important to use materials that can either withstand that amount of water or can withstand it for a fair amount of time before being replaced, as it would cost a considerable amount if the wrong materials were used and needed to be replaced frequently.
