ICS Special Education Process: (or This is How Special Education Referrals…

- - - - 4a) Counselor may recommend outside evaluation.
        
        4b) Parents pursue independent evaluation and return results to school.
        
        5) Counselor and administration notify teacher and Learning Support Services.
        
        Teacher demonstrates and models expected behaviors.

        Teacher checks frequently for student understanding.
        
        Positive reinforcement.
        
        Reduction in the number of items a student must complete on an assignment.

        A "quiet zone" for student to retreat to when overstimulated.
        
        Sensory materials, like a bean bag, stress ball, or chew straws for alleviating stress.
        
        Sensory-blocking materials like earplugs or earphones, to occupy or isolate a certain sense.
        
        Constant supervision for social interactions.
        
        Visuals with specific social rules that are easily visible and understandable by all students.
        
        Time spent with learning support rehearsing strategies for social interactions.
        
        Any changes in the daily routine are explained in advance to prepare student.
        
        Teachers are instructed on student's communication abilities.
        
        Use an A-B-C form to help student understand that their behavior has consequences.

        Use concrete language to eliminate figurative language. Most likely this student is
        very literal and has trouble understanding figures of speech.

        laptop computer or iPad to use with educational software, internet browsers,
        and word processing software.
        
        noise-cancelling headphones
        
        Apps to help with organization, such as *Visual Schedule Planner,
        Pocket Schedule, or Functional Planning System*

        Apps like Noise Down, which will automatically sound an alarm
        when the decibel level gets too high, or Too Noisy Pro to indicate to
        the individual that they are being too loud.
        
        Apps for sequencing tasks like Sequencing Tasks: Life Skills that
        reduce the number of steps to complete a task, or give a visual of
        the task steps in sequence.
        
        Virtual environment software to help develop social awareness and
        social understanding.
- - - - Parents and student agree to either take outside steps to improve behavior within a certain time-frame, or that student begins working with learning support at our school, or that student withdraws from school.
        
        If parents and student agree to begin working with learning support at our school (as is most often the case), administration notifies Learning Support Services and student's teachers.
