Geometry in Bridges
Engineering
-
-
-
-
-
Early days: Wooden bridges, soon replaced by iron models
-
Symmetry
-
Important in bridge design as whole bridge must be able to bear weight like the other side can hold.
-
Eg. each arch on an arch bridge must be symmetrical, triangles on a truss bridge must be symmetrical, spacing on cables in suspension bridges must also be symmetrical
Connector plates
-
-
-
When pressure is added to the point of intersecting, the connector plate distributes the pressure.

-
Arches
Used in arch bridges, weight of an arch bridge is carried outward along the curve of the arch to the supports at each end.
