Injury prevention methods
Screening
Use of functional movement screening is a useful tool in determing any areas of muscular imbalance or tightness which if not worked upon can cause injury
General screening such as BMI, posture assessment and gait can also provide indicators where potential injury may occur
Electrocardiograms typically used to look at the electrical conductivity of an individuals heart, through this kind of test they can determine any cardiovascular abnormalities
Flexibility training
Active stretching is taking a body part beyond the point of resistance
Passive stretching is the use of an external force to create a stretch
idea of increasing the range of motion at a joint through different mediums
Ballistic stretching is the use of swinging and bouncing movements to further increase the range of motion
Static stretching is the holding of a stretch in a position for 10 seconds or more
Warm up
A Warm up is essential in injury prevention as you prepare the body physically and mentally for exercise
Physiologically, increase in heart and breathing rate occur, vascular shunt occurs
Psychologically individual knows they are beginning exercise so neurological pathways begin firing
Use of cardiovascular exercise and stretching pre exercise
Protective equipment
E.g. gum shields, shin pads and body armour
they do not completely prevent injury only reduce severity if heavy impact is taken
Used whilst competing within a sport can help reduce impacts taken and severity of injury
Taping and Bracing
Use of kinesiology tape for directly supporting muscles which stretch as a muscle contracts
Bracing involves the use of hinged supports to provide extra stability the aim is to prevent further injury from occurring
Taping assists the stability and acts as a support for the joint
