-Assess vital signs
-Auscultate heart sounds to detect murmurs, change in preexisting murmur, or any other extra sound.
-Past medical history
-Ask about current medications such as immunosuppressants
-Recent surgical procedures
-Ask patient for recent feelings of anorexia, chills, generalized weakness, fatigue, palpitations, dyspnea on exertion, night sweats, muscle tenderness, chest, back or abdominal pain.
-Monitor for elevated temperature since it is an early sign of infection
-Assess for life threatening complications such as, stroke, pulmonary edema, and/or heart failure
-Monitor laboratory data for effectiveness of antibiotic therapy
-Monitor for crackles, tachypnea, signs of bleeding, Osler's nodes on extremities, dysrhythmias, murmurs, or extra sounds
