Periodic Table (Structure)
Groups = columns across from left to right, 1-18
Group 1 is 1A, 2 is 2A, skip 3-12, 13 is 3A, 14 is 4A, all the way to 18, 8A
Periods = rows from top to bottom. 7 total
Alkali Metals
Group 1 or 1A, not including Hydrogen
Soft silvery metals, extremely reactive (all will react with water)
So reactive you won’t find in pure state (have to extract from something)
Transition Metals
Groups 3-12
Solids at room temperature (except mercury)
Malleable, ductile
Alkaline Earth Metals
Group 2 or 2A
Reactive, but not as reactive as alkali metals (won’t find in pure state)
Nonmetals
Brittle (found in different states of matter)
Halogens
Group 7A or 17
Reactive nonmetals
Halogen means salt former
Noble Gases
Group 8A or 18
Colorless, very unreactive
Metalloids
Table is mostly split with metals on left, nonmetals on right--separated by a jagged line running through groups 13-16
Most elements on the separating line have properties of both gas and metal, though there are some discrepancies on which ones (can vary)
