Key Principles
Checks and Balances: allows each branch of government of limit the powers of the other branches in order to prevent abuse of power.

Separation of Powers-divided power between the judicial, legislative, and executive branches.
Rule of law: Laws that each person is subject and accountable for and is fairly applied and enforced, principles of government by law.

Enumerated Power: Helps describe how a central government with three distinct branches can operate. (expressed powers)
Reserved power: powers that are not "enumerated" (written down, assigned).

Amendments

How are they made?
Proposal- proposed by either a two-third vote in Congress, including both the House of Representatives and the Senate, or a national convention made up of two-thirds of the states. All our current amendments were proposed by Congress.
Ratification-Amendment has to be ratified. Can be ratified by either three-fourths of the state legislatures or by state conventions in three-fourths of the state legislatures or by state conventions in three-fourths of the states. Only the 21st amendment used the state convention method.
