Teacher observations (informal). After giving students a settling in period, the students still have behavioural or skills gaps. These issues do not decrease or perhaps have increased in severity or frequency.
Background information. School reports and any available medical history can be reviewed to check for any signs of issues in the past.
Previous teachers. Teachers talk to the students previous teachers to gain a deeper understanding of their background.
Meeting between LS and teachers Teachers meet with learning support and discuss the students specific case. #
Informal LS observation. LS teachers complete an informal observation in an attempt to determine whether the students issues are a result of classroom management or if they could point to the student having special needs.
Feedback session. Teacher and LS teachers meet to discuss the informal observation. If LS teachers feel the student might have a learning disability, teachers move discuss with parents. If LS teachers feel this is more of an issue with classroom management, the school works in-house to help the teacher and student.
Classroom management and differentiation. The teacher works with their team leader, principle and learning support to implement classroom management and differentiation strategies that help create the student learn more effectively in the class. LS and the teacher work together and monitor the situation over time.
If differentiated instruction and classroom management are successful , continue to work as a team monitoring the student 's progress closely. If unsuccessful continue to seek parent permission. #
Parent permission. The class teacher and LS teachers seek parent permission for a formal observation of the student.
Formal observation. Parents give permission for LS teachers to performa a formal observation. Two observations made by two different LS staff.
Formal assessment by LS teachers. The assessment will help LS teachers create an IEP for the student.

No permission given. Teachers work with learning support to help the student as best they can. Teachers look to differentiation and management strategies. #
Parents. Teachers meet parents to try and find out if there are any underlying causes for the behaviour or issues.
