The House on Mango Street
Esperanza meets a friend named Cathy. Cathy tells her she is moving because the neighborhood is getting bad. Esperanza's family has just moved in, so Cathy means her family is bad. This makes Esperanza feel bad.
Esperanza meets sisters, Lucy and Rachel. They pool together their money and buy a bicycle to share. As soon as they get it, they all three get on and ride down Mango Street, laughing the whole time.
Their neighbor, Louie, has a cousin who stole a beautiful big yellow Cadillac, and picked them all up to go for a ride. As soon as they got back, the police come racing down the alley to get him, and he crashes the car as he tries to get away. they take him to jail.
Rosa Vargas has tons of kids. Her husband left her and she can't control them. One day they were playing chicken on Mr. Benny's roof and he asked them to get down. They spit on him!
Mamacita is a Mexican woman who comes to the US to be with her husband who is already working here. She is very sad and misses Mexico, and cries. She stays in the house all of the time, because she is so fat, or sad, or can't climb upstairs.
Esperanza didn't want to eat lunch at home anymore, so she asked her mom to pack her lunch so she could eat in the canteen. She asked the nun if she could do that, and she made her cry. She ended up eating in the canteen, but cried the whole time because the nun was so mean.
Esperanza and her family go to her cousin's baptism party and get to dress up and dance. Esperanza dances with her Uncle Nacho and has so much fun, and her mother is so proud.
Rachel, Lucy, and Esperanza get some fancy high heel shoes from a neighbor and run around the neighborhood in them. Some bum tells them they look great and ask if he gives them a dollar, would Rachel kiss him? Lucy grabs her and they all run.
Esperanza gets her first job with Aunt Lala at Peter Pan Photo finishers. An older Asian man tells her it's his birthday, and grabbed her and kisses her!
Esperanza's mother and she are talking and her mother tells her that she "could have been someone." She was very smart, but quit school. She tells Esperanza to never quit school.
Esperanza's grandfather dies, and her father comes and sits on her bed and cries. She imagines how awful it would be if her father died. She holds him close and let's him cry.
Esperanza and her friends play a game imitating people to be funny. They imitate her Aunt Lupe one day, who has been sick and blind for a very long time. It turns out, her aunt dies the very next day. Esperanza feels so bad.
Esperanza gets her palm read by her neighbor, Elenita. She says that Esperanza will find a "home in the heart." Esperanza doesn't understand what that means, but she hopes it means she will get a new house.
Edna owns the big building next door, and has a daughter Ruthie. Ruthie is a grown up but plays with the kids. She loves reading so Esperanza recites for her "The Walrus and the Carpenter." Ruthie gets teary eyed, but then tells Esperanza she has beautiful teeth.
Lucy, Rachel, and Esperanza bought a bicycle together. They ride all day together laughing.
