During this time not only spices and goods were not the only things being traded, but the slave trade was starting, and people were being traded. The word slave does not come from African slaves but from Russia were Slaves worked but were unpaid. The Europeans wanted money and power, so they soon joined the slave trade. Europeans would trade weapons, tobacco, rum, metalwork, and textiles in exchange for African slaves.
As expected some African leaders spoke out and rebelled against. One of the first to speak out was the leader of the Kongo in West-Central Africa. This man was Affonoso I he was a Christan leader who attempted to slow down the slave trade and stop it. His Christan beliefs came from the missionaries that traveled around Africa, converting African states to Christianity.
