Slave Trade

Mombasa- a city in southeastern Kenya, located on a small coastal island

Malindi- a coastal town in southeast Kenya

Plantations- large estates run by and owner's overseer

Affonso I- ruler of Kongo in west-central Africa and was an early voice raised against the slave trade.

Missionaries- someone who was sent to do religious work in a territory of a foreign country.

Asante Kingdom- a kingdom that emerged in the 1700s in Ghana and was active in the slave trade

Osei Tutu- a military leader who won control over the trading city of Kumasi and led the Asante Kingdom

Monopoly- complete control of a product or business by one person or group

Oyo Empire- Yoruba empire that arose in the 1600s in Nigeria and dominated its neighbors for 100 years

Cape Town- seaport city and legislative capital of South Africa. It was the first Dutch colony in Africa

The Boers- Dutch people who settled in Cape Town and eventually migrated inland
