by Betty Friedan in 1963, based on interviews with women who graduated from Smith College; they all felt despair even though they had picture-perfect lives, because of the "feminine mystique" (after WW2 when a national myth emerged that a woman's place is in the home)
pink tax
extra amount women are charged for products and services (clothes, dry cleaning, hygiene products, vehicle repair)
identity politics
political positions based on the interests and perspectives of social groups with which people identify; includes the ways in which people's politics may be shaped by aspects of their identity through loosely correlated social organizations

test that asks whether there are at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man

compliant sex
when someone has sex with another because it's easier to than denying the person, or the consequences of not having sex are worse than having sex
disciplinary mechanisms
practices: shaving legs, coloring/straightening/curling hair, and applying makeup; "disciplinary": bc they involve social control in the sense that we spend time, money & effort, and imbue meaning in these practices that regulate our lives
