Listening
Receiving
-
It uses both verbal and nonverbal messages.
People can improve their skills by maintaining their role as a listener, avoid assuming you understand, and focusing attention on the speaker's messages.
-
In a group, only one person should be talking at a time, also try and use more common terms so the conversation does not sound fake.
Remembering
It occurs when someone says something and it goes into your memory which a reconstructive tool and use it later on in life.
In the classroom, it could be helpful to remember information by taking notes.
My patient was talking with me about her mother and how she was becoming ill. Later that week I asked my patient how her mother has been doing. I remembered that her mother was not feeling the best.
Short-term memory is very limited in capacity and something like a phone number, whereas long-term is unlimited and stays around forever.
Focus your attention on the central ideas, unite the new with the old and try to relate the information, repeating things such as names and key concepts, and also organizing what you hear will improve someone's remembering skills.
What is it?
All of the steps take place at the same time.
When listening to a patient, I could be understanding and evaluating what the patient is saying.
It is the process of receiving, understanding, remembering, evaluating, and responding to verbal and/or nonverbal messages.
It is crucial to help build and maintain relationships.
Understanding
-
A few tips for improving one's understanding skills would be to ask questions, rephrase their ideas into our own words, and also to see the speaker's message from their own point of view.
If I wanted to improve my understanding skills I could sit where I can see the instructor and any presentation to prepare myself for listening.
-
Evaluating
-
I could evaluate my patient if they got all excited about not needing anymore medicine.
-
A few ways to improve one's evaluating skills is to resist evaluation unless you understand their point of view fully, assume that the speaker is a person of goodwill, and distinguish the facts from the opinions.
Responding
-
Backchanneling cues are messages that will let the speaker know that you are understanding or paying attention.
Someone can improve their responding skills by expressing support and understanding, avoid the common problem-causing listening responses, own your own responses, or even using varied cues that show you are listening.
I would be using backchanneling cues in class if I would nod my head in agreement.
