Encourage participation of "open days" for visits to law schools
"Diversity begins at home" at WB NUJS
Actively speaking with the children of all our support staff, cleaning staff, gardeners, etc. to encourage them to take up the study of law.

Problems, Objectives, Ultimate Vision
Objective
: IDIA identifies underprivileged students w/ aptitude for law and trains them for entrance exams over 2-3 year period. Empowers & supports throughout 5 year law school
Activities
:
b) Empower underprivileged communities by fostering creation of future lawyers and leaders
c) Enhance diversity of law schools by promoting access in favour of students from underprivileged communities
Diverse student body --> Enhanced openness to diversity and challenge, enhanced critical thinking ability, educated and involved citizenry
d) Provide academic, social, professional and financial support to the trainees admitted to law schools (the “scholars”) required for building them into leading lawyers and community leaders
a) Sensitise underprivileged communities to law as potential career
Ultimate vision
transform the legal ecosystem as a whole, such that IDIA itself becomes redundant over time i.e. diversity-friendly environment that attracts and facilitates infusion of underprivileged children to NLSs and to top echelons of legal profession, without external involvement/aid.
Problems:
Diversity Deficit
:
NLUs elitist & deficit of diversity. < 2% admitted to top NLUs in 2013 went to vernacular (local) language schools. Severe lack of representation of minority & differently abled students, & marginalised parts of India. Lack of NLU diversity will soon translate to lack of diversity at top law firms.
Inclusion Gap
Underprivileged communities left behind as India surges economically; also no access to high quality legal resources & expertise. When available, pro-bono/charity. To resolve, aims to create skilled lawyers from communities to self-advocate w/out external dependency
Underprivileged students in India lack real access to quality legal education
Lack of awareness about law as a career that can improve lives
Entrance exams (such as CLAT) require expensive coaching
Extremely high fees and expenditure for 5 year law degree
Lack of financial aid to economically backward students
