Ethnicity
- not a culture:
~ many Australians of ethnic heritage identify more with Australian culture than with the culture of their parents or grandparents
Relating to or peculiar to a human pop or grp, esp one w/ a common ancestry, language etc
Relating to the origin, classification, characteristics etc of such grps
Of or relating to members of the Aus community who are migrants or the descendants of migrants & whose 1st language is not English

No biological basis for racial classification
- BUT a long history of attempts to organise grps of ppl based on similar skin clr & phys appearance
Hard to define bc
- absence of any biological foundation
- race in society: connected to other soc forces & sts
Socially constructed thru human interaction
- BUT as a social force: race is v real in its consequences
Culture
shared understandings tht constitute conventions & practices & th ideas, symbols & concrete artifacts tht sustain conventions & practices & make them meaningful
... an integrated pattern of human behaviour, includes:
- roles, languages, beliefs, practices, customs
- ... of a ethnic, religious, social, political or other grp; the ability to transmit the above to succeeding gens; dynamic in nature
Cultural Bias:
- unique personal worldview influenced by your own culture that nurtures you
- the way one judges & make assumptions

Diversity
- culture can promote cohesion & survival of a community
- BUT can also create boundaries between individuals/ grps tht are diff
Cultural Competency
- " the ability to identify & challenge one's own cultureal assumptions, one's values & beliefs.
- abt developing empathy & connected knowledge, ability to see the world thru another's eyes or atleast to recig tht others may view the world thru diff cultural lenses"
an important vehicle to increasing access to quality care for all patient pops, by tailoring delivery to meet patients' social, cultural, & linguistic needs

- stereotypes abt grps of ppl tht individuals forms outside their own consciousness
- replicates the social hierarchy & influences behaviour
- Results in decisions & actions based on perceptions of ppl's gender, race class & other characteristics
- often incompatible w/ our values
