Why do Some Places Face Health Challenges
Health and Gender
Baby Girls at Risk
700,000 baby girls are either aborted, killed or sent somewhere remote
Sex ratio is the number of males per 100 females in the population
In developed and developing regions such as north america, south america or europe the male to female baby ratio is 105:100 and in the worlds most populous countries such as india or china the ratio is 112:100
This causes a surplus of men and not enough women to marry these men
Mothers at Risk
Maternal Mortality Rate is the annual number of female deaths per 100,000 births from any cause related to or aggravated by pregnancy or its management
In much of Africa and Asia this rate exceeds 100 deaths er 100,000 mothers or 1 percent whereas in Europe the rate is less than .1 percent
The united nations gathered that the main reason for deaths in these countries to mothers is hemorrhage followed by disorders from pregnancy, this is less common in more developed countries because they have more developed technology to prevent these things from happening than the developing countries do
This rate in the US is higher due to the fact that problems people with low income face
Health and Aging
Population Pyramids
A population period is a bar graph that displays the percentage of a places population for each age and gender
Countries in stage 2 would have a wider base which means more old people than young but a country in stage 4 would have a wider top because they'd have more young people than old
Caring for Young and Old
The dependency ratio is the number of people who are either to old or to young to work compared to amount of people in their productive years
Dependents are usually people aged 15 and under and 65 and older, the greater the dependency ratio the more stress the people working have to provide for their country
The Infant Mortality Rate is the annual number of deaths of infants under the age of 1 compared to the total number of births
The more developed countries have a lower IMR because of the more advanced doctors and technology, 1 in every 15 babies die in Africa and 1 in every 250 die in Europe
The Elderly Support Ratio is the number of working aged people divided by the number of people 65 and older
Medical Services
Health Care
Developed countries help people who cant work such as the elderly, sick, disabled, orphaned, veterans, widows, unemployed or single parents
The expenses of this are 1000 in Europe, 5000 in the US and only 100 in Africa
Developed countries spend more on health care and spend a larger percentage of wealth on their health care
Medical Facilities
The more spent on health care means more medical facilities and in Europe there are more than 50 hospital beds per 10,000 people compared to fewer than 20 in Africa
In most developed countries health costs are almost nothing and but in Africa the average person has to pay 50 percent of the health care cost
Developed countries are trying to keep this service easily available but the economy has slowed and more people need assistance
The Epidmiologic Transition
Epidemiology is the branch if medical concerned with the incidence, distribution and control of diseases that are common among a population at a certain time and are produced by special causes no usually present in the affected place
Epidemiologic Transition focuses on distinctive health threats in each stage of the demographic transition
Stage 1
Infection and parasite diseases were principal causes of human death, along with humans attacking humans and attacks by animals
Stage 2
A pandemic is a disease that spreads over a large geographic area and affects much of the population
This is the stage of receding pandemics due to better sanitation, nutrition and medicine during the industrial revolution
Stage 3
This is characterized by a drop in infection deaths and deals more with chronic deaths from age
The two main chronic disorders are cancer and cardiovascular diseases
Stage 4
This is the delaying of these chronic disorders due to advances in medical technology and better advances in medicine
The consumption of unhealthy foods has led to increased obesity in developed countries
