Description: Healing Haiti’s mission is to leverage resources to elevate and unify Haitian families so that the cycle of poverty is broken and the fabric of the community is strengthened. To this purpose, the organization has procured 12 hectares (ha) (30 acres) of land in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where a demonstration and educational farm will be created. The purpose of the farm is threefold: to provide food for Grace Village, Fleri Bakery and restaurant; to teach local Haitians best farming practices; and to create a market around the farm through value added products that will provide employment for the community.
Description: The Starkey Hearing Institute is located approximately 13 kilometers east of downtown Lusaka, Zambia. The institute sits on 6.5 ha of land, 5 of which is vacant farmland with excellent soil. The land has the potential to produce an abundance of food for the school and to sell to expanding markets in Lusaka. A viable farm business will provide the school with a source of income to support their operational budget and decrease their dependency on grants. A secondary goal of the Starkey farm project is to provide a model farm for the surrounding community—demonstrating sustainable farming practices that will increase yields and soil fertility.
Description: A demonstration garden hub will be created on the site of the Lukosi Maternity Hospital in rural Zimbabwe. The goal of the project is to train the local population in sustainable farming methods. A secondary objective is to link rural development to natural resource management in and around wildlife areas to minimize human-wildlife conflict and decrease poaching.
Description: IRIS has procured 1.6ha of land designated for the University Farm in Pemba, Mozambique. As this is raw land and the soil is sandy and depleted, a well must be dug, and special attention paid to soil rehabilitation. The goal is to use this site as an educational farm for students attending IRIS's agriculture program at the university.
Description: The Irving Gardens Community Farm is a collaborative project spearheaded by Matter in partnership with Youth Farm. The vision is to create an urban farm in the Harrison neighborhood of North Minneapolis that will serve and engage the neighborhood, leading to a healthier community. The project scope includes: site design and preparation, tools and equipment, a growing plan, and an education practicum to be used in teaching and engaging the community on best practices for sustainable farm systems. The strength of a custom designed farm combined with education and engagement with youth and families from the neighborhood sets the stage for skills training, relationship building, youth empowerment, and ultimately, improved community health.

Description: The Gorgui Dieng farm is a 10 acre farm near Kebemer Senegal. In Partnership with the Gorgui Dieng foundation, Matter has worked to design and implement a plan to: restore the soil, increase biodiversity, improve the living conditions for the farm workers, decrease water usage, and increase yields. To these ends we have installed a 30'x48' shadehouse and a 1 mile perimeter fence, and delivered a wide variety of farming tools and equipment and trained in their use.
