Contrast
Hyde never has any pictures of himself, which contrasts with the normal Victorian gentleman who would have loads of photos to emphasise their wealth and splendour.
-
Setting
Soho is a negative area, hid in the reputable West End of London. This represents how the notorious Hyde is hidden inside the esteemed Jekyll.
Metaphors
Hyde's maid had "an evil face, smoothed by hypocrisy" yet "her manners were excellent", showing that she has two sides about her. This represents Victorian gentlemen appearing prestigious and regarded, although all they are doing is concealing their faults.
Symbolism
The settings in the novella represent and embody Jekyll and Hyde. The poor, neglected Soho represents Hyde and his air of mystery, where as the wealthy and esteemed estates in East London represent Jekyll.
Visual imagery
When Utterson says that the 'fog lifted a little', its almost as if a curtain is being lifted to unveil reality to him-not everything is perfect.
