How Stalin rose to power
Death of Lenin
Petrograd renamed Leningrad.
Held Bolsheviks together during
crisis.
From 1921 onwards, health
deteriorated – finally died in 1924.
Was a great speaker and politician
Ruthless when he needed to be
Lenin and Stalin
-
In his testament, he included
information which could end
Stalin’s career once and for all.
-
Near Lenin's death, Stalin would make sure that he was by his side all the time
Was the chief mourner at Lenin's funeral
Tricked Trotsky into not showing up for funeral.
-
Stalin
Master manipulator
Allied with Zinoviev and Kamenev
against Trotsky.
Later allied with Bukharin against
Zino, Kam, & Trotsky in support of
NEP
When he defeated and expelled the 3,
turned on Bukharin and NEP!
By 1929, Stalin was the undisputed
leader of the Soviet Union.
Many former rivals had to renounce
their views to be allowed to rejoin
Party.
Ruthless and ambitious
**Persecute his political enemies was an important factor to allow him to control Soviet Union
As the General Secretary of the Bolshevik Party he had power to appoint people to important posts This allow him to remove people that are not his supporter
His greatest threat was Trotsky who had popular support. He made use of Kaminev and Zinoviev to oust Trotsky from Politburo
He was lucky
Sheer luck that Lenin’s Testament
was not published – Kamenev and
Zinoviev afraid
Trotsky kept silent – HUGE mistake
Ban on factions worked to Stalin’s
advantage – prevented Trotsky and
the rest from mobilizing support.
In the end expelled Zinoviev,
Kamenev and Trotsky on the
grounds of factionalism in 1927
-
In the end what happened to Trotsky?
Refused to renounce his views and
was exiled by Stalin.
No country wanted to take him in
Finally fled to Mexico
After numerous attempts, Stalin’s
hitmen tracked him down and
assassinated him in 1940.
