Approaches To Creativity
Studied cool people to see what the had jo normal people lacked. Artists, scientists etc.
Big-C creativity- geniuses.
Cognitive approach shuru hui thi 1970s 80s mein. To study internal mental processes. Which forced them to look at normal people and not geniuses.
Small- C. When given enough time, everyone would be able to come up with answers like that 9 dots.
80s and 90s, Sociocultural approach
Individualistic vs Socio cultural
Individualistic: New mental combination that is EXPRESSED (materialised) in the world. Doesnt really mean that its good
Small-C
Socio-cultural: validation from a social group. And the idea has to be novel and appropriate.
Does it have to be appropriate? According to Caro, yes.
Big-C because they will be better able to produce novel and appropriate ideas.
Definition really matters because that decides how it will be measured.
Caro's definition of creativity: Novel hona is common in both. But should it be novel for us or for others? It has to be novel for the individual and it has to be adequate.
Four Ps framework- Mel Rhodes 1961
Person*
Some Personality Traits do define how creative you can be because you need to be able to challenge your certainties.
Openness to experience, Neuroticism
Cognitive Capacites: Working memory, Intelligence
Genetics
Process*
What stages does a person go through? And can they be predicted?
problem solving vs creative thinking
Can the process be thought? No but it can be improved
Maybe: Divergent Thinking then you need to choose one, and you apply filters so that's called convergent thinking and then you reach ONE idea.
Product- not the focus of creativity research, more often the tool of measurement
Most tangible thing jo

Originality, Effectiveness
Domain specific knowledge honi chahye for the quality of product
This is an arguable topic. Would Picasso be a good chef?
Press
The context. How the environment helps to instil creativity- universities, schools, family structure. AND the kind of relation a person has with the environment. Some people are more creative when they are alone and some people work better in a lot of noise and stimuli.
Amabile and hsdrbhgbrdk said that 8 characteristics aid creativity. Freedom, supervisor, communicative coworks diverse, resources, challenging work, cooperation, recognition, support for creativity.
Critical Analysis Exercises: is it domain specific or not? Read the papers and critcially evaluate the papers in light of this. Empirical evidence dekh ke
Runco is an important figure in creativity.
Feedback
Write clearly and philosophically.
Vague cheezain nahin likhni. 'some shared assumptions'? Which ones and why is the research more in favour of domain specifc? Be to the point.
Have more structure
Everything you say, back it up immediately/
True critical evaluation: Instead of trying to prove one theory wrong by presenting another one, CRITICISE their theory, ke uss banday ki reserach mein masla kya hai. Why it shouldnt be trusted.

Mixed evidence hai.
Joy Paul Guilford
1950s discussed creativity.
Behaviourism and psychoanalysis were leading at that time.
For Freud, it was sexual so you should not study it.
Behaviourism linked it with intelligence and they thought it was vague to measure.
Need for creativity in: Arts, science, industry, education
Leisure time zyada ho jata hai when machines take over repetitive tasks.
DIVERGENT THINKING: ability to have a number of ideas, or unusual ideas.
What is an insight?
Problem solving with (bulb problem) and without insight (arithmetic).
Study- people given problems and were asked how close they felt they were to the problem. Insight problem solutions are SUDDEN. Which is why it feels magical but you can train your brain for it.
