- Sept 3, 1939: France and Britain declare war on Germany
- Sitzkrieg/Sitting War
- after declaring war, Britain and France mobilized armies along Maginot line
- Waited for germans to attack while Germans waited for them to attack
- April 9, 1940: Hitler launches ambush on Denmark and Norway
- useful to have these territories so Germans can strike Britain
- May 1940: Dunkirk:
- German forces join with troops in Belgium
- trapped Allies in Dunkirk (french port city)
- May 26-June 4: civilian + military armada rescuing soldiers from the beaches
- June 22, 1940: France surrenders
- After Dunkirk, resistance in France crumbled
- Germans controlled northern part and southern part by a pupper gov. controlled by Marshal Philippe Petan
- Charles de Gaulle set up a government-in-exile in London
9: Battle of Britain - summer 1940 - May 10, 1941
- Luftwaffe began bombing, first targeted British airfields and factories and then the cities
- development of radar helped British because it could tell the humber, speed, and direction of incoming warplanes
- another creation that helped the British was the Engima which helped them decode German messages
-to avoid the attacks of Britain, Germans gave up daytime raids and started night bombing
- TAUGHT ALLIES THAT HITLER COULD BE STOPPED/BLOCKED
March 1941: Lend-Lease Act: President can lend arms or other supplies to any country vital to the USA, signed b/c Roosevelt knew if the Allies ell the US would be drawn into war
Sept. 4, 1941: German U-boat fires on U.S destroyer in the Atlantic, Roosevelt tells his soldiers to shoot the submarines

BATTLE OF STALINGRAD (June 28, 1942-Feb 2, 1943)

TURNING POINT!! German forces weakened so started losing battles in Northern Africa. Morale of Russian soldiers goes up
Invades with 330,000 people but comes back with roughly 90,000
Invaded during a cold harsh Russian winter + Russians were burning their land and killing their resources so that the Germans would have nothing to work with when they reach the cities
General Halder wants to surrender but Hitler says NO, so Halder is replaced with Zeitzler

Japanese surprised that America also declared war on them bc USA has hd a history of neutrality. ALSO army isn't known for its prowess
Dec. 7, 1941: Attack that drew America into war
USA had fewer ships than Japan, but had more resources to make more of them fast
USA did "island hopping" and a strategy of: protect the Australia, take back Philipines, bomb Japan
ASIA AND USA + EUROPE
China/Korea:
- soldiers, everyone, esp. women + children
- attacked by Japanese, their slogan: burn all, kill all, steal all
- seized people from both regions for manual labor
Japan:
- children and citizens
- children taken out of school to work on weapons
- 1/2 million bombs dropped
- peopel on fire, 120,000 killed in just a few hours
USA dropped nukes on Japan bc.....
- testing out their power
- showing off their superiority to Japanese people
- to scare stalin
- Ideally, Americans would scare Japanese to surrender so they won’t have to kill them
Germany
- workers affected
- homes being destroyed by fire tornadoes caused by bombs
- some people trapped in burning houses
- women working in place of men
