Two major types
1. Primary Biliary Cirrhosis
Caused by:
Thought to be related to immune system
Slow progression
portal HTN
liver transplant, death
cirrhosis
Affects:
Small and intermediate sized intrahepatic bile ducts
95% of pts are women
A chronic cholestatic disease
Nutritional consequences:
Fat soluble vit deficiencies
Hypercholesterolemia
Osteopenia
Symptoms
Fatigue
Itching
2. Sclerosing Cholangitis
Slow progression:
Hepatic failure
Cholangiocarcinoma
Portal HTN
Disease of the bile ducts
Affects:
Extrahepatic bile ducts
70-90% of pts also have IBD
Symptoms:
Fatigue
Itching
