There are, however, ways to strengthen the interview process:
use multiple interviewers (ensuring that minority groups are represented where relevant)
make the interview structured (predetermined sequence), standardised (predetermined questions asked of every person interviewed) and focused on achieving a small number of goals
focus on what can be reasonably assessed in interview (interpersonal style, personality characteristics, job knowledge and skill)
use situational interviews – behaviourally based questions focused on past situations, experiences or possible future situations
ensure training of interviewers including building self-awareness regarding biases and prejudices
supplement the interview process with other methods (e.g. intelligence tests and reference checking).
