The Biggest Hurdle to Flipping Your Class
Biggest Hurdle = Teachers need to flip their thinking about class time.
Stepping Back from an Old Model
#
Get away from direct instruction (i.e. lecturing) to a whole group and use class time for meaningful interaction and activities.
Ask the question, "What is the best use of class time?".
When flipping the class, surrender control of the learning to the students.
Teaching Learners
#
Flip your thinking from your class being about the
content
to it being about the
process of learning
.
Don't teach the subject, teach students how to be learners.
Become a learning facilitator and coach vs. a teacher who disseminates content.
Alternative Assessments
#
Embrace alternative assessments vs. standard summative assessments.
Let your students design videos, video games, art projects, etc. to show what they learned.
My Comments
I agree that the biggest hurdle is getting teachers on board with the idea of a flipped classroom model.
This will make or break the successful implementation of the new model.
I appreciate the idea of using alternative assessments.
As someone who gets test anxiety, this approach would have helped my ability to display what I learned through other means.
Teaching students how to be learners will benefit them in every class moving forward.
I believe using a flipped classroom model will also help students engage more with their instructor.
This will have a myriad of benefits (social and personal development, communication skills, etc.)
