Mechanism of breathing

when we breathe in: the rib cage is raised , the diaphragm contracts and flattens down and the volume of the thorax is increased so air is drawn into the lungs
when we breathe out: the rib cage drops down, the diaphragm relaxes and arches up and the volume of the thorax decreases forcing the air to exit the lungs

inhaled air
it has 21% oxygen, 70% nitrogen, 0.03% carbon dioxide, varible amount of water vapor and a tiny amount of noble gases.

exhaled air

it has 16% oxygen ( decrease ), 70% nitrogen, 4% carbon dioxide ( increased ), more amount water vapor compared to inhaled air and a tiny amount of noble gases.
