Sacraments - Pilgrimage
What is a pilgrimage?
-
-
-
"A journey by a believer to a holy site for religious reasons; pilgrimage is itself an act of worship and devotion"
-
Lourdes
A sacred place in south-west France which in 1858 a young girl called Bernadette claims she saw the Virgin Mary whilst praying with Rosary beads.
As she prayed, Mary looked over her lovingly
Bernadette saw her in a grotto near the river #
"As i raised my head to look at the grotto, i saw a lady dressed in white, wearing a white dress, a blue girdle and a yellow rose on each foot, the same colour as the chain of her rosary: the beads of the rosary were white"
-
Mary told Bernadette to dig for a spring of water, which was discovered to have healing properties
Iona
An Irish missionary who brought Christianity to Scotland, established a small monastic community there.
They hold daily services in the abbey church, lead a seven mile hike to the island's holy and historic spots, and conduct workshops on christian themes
Iona is a 'thin place', where the veil between the spiritual world and physical world is thin.
-
It is now the home of the ecumenical Iona community and a place of Christian pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
There is time for silence, for reflection or meditation, for reading the Bible or holy books and for enjoying the area's natural beauty
