Queen's Soul Food
- Create a network of student volunteers who will deliver unserved cafeteria food the homeless shelters in Kingston every night
- Give volunteers the opportunity to collaborate , build relationships with new students and execute new ideas they may have for the club (Matrix, 2017)
- Develop relationships with the Queen's cafeterias and get the to agree to be involved with this initiative
- Reach out to three different shelters around Kingston that are in need of more food donations
- Raise awareness about food insecurity in our own communities
- Encourage Queen's students to be mindful of creating unnecessary food waste when they are eating in the cafeterais
- Food insecurity is an issue in Kingston, with 8% of households dealing with this issue (Pratt - Campell, 2016)
- Students in the Queen's cafeteria often waste food due to the all you can eat serving style
- Do you ever wonder where the unserved food from the cafeteria goes?
- The unserved cafeteria food is thrown out at the end of the day, creating unnecessary waste
- The Cafeterias will be willing and able to give away unserved food. I.e. They do not already have an alternative
- Kingston Shelters will be open to receiving
Cafeteria Food
- We will be able to attract many volunteers
- Volunteers will be invested in the outcome of club goals and will thus push to innovate and add creative ideas to our mission and our logistical process (Matrix, 2017)
- Partner with local businesses to support homeless shelters
- Booth outside the cafeteria to raise awareness about food waste and to encourage students to take what they can eat
- Bake sale to raise money for shelters in Kingston
- Volunteer socials and forums to encourage creative thinking and connection. This will help foster community and safe space
-
c) Special Events Team: Coordinate special events to raise awareness about our mission and potentially raise money that can be donated to shelters
-
d) Being a part of our executive team will give members the chance to develop employable skills such as combining analytical thinking by developing logistics and creative skills by designing new marketing campaigns and innovating the clubs image to attract new volunteers and raise awareness (Matrix, 2017)
- Raise awareness about food insecurity
- Encourage Queen's students to think about food waste in the cafeterias (USDA, 2017)
- A student run group that delivers unserved cafeteria food to local shelters
- Risks / Potential Problems
- Volunteers have a conflict with their shift
- Cafeteria does not have excess food one evening
- We need to focus on our core solution (cafeteria food runs) or we may lose focus and attract fewer volunteers. We have to establish ourselves before we try to expand too fast (O'Rourke, 2013)
-
c) Value to Queen's Students - assurance that the cafeteria is reducing waste and contributing to a good cause. Opportunity to volunteer and help the Kingston Community
-
- Create a "Soul Food Awareness Week" where we have special events every day in one week in the Winter.
- Create Soul Food chapters at other universities around Ontario
- Create yearly fundraising goals that once we have enough awareness we can reach. These fundraising goals will be donated to the shelters
10.Marketing Methods
- Attend Queen's clubs fairs (i.e. Sidewalk Sale, Clubs fair) to recruit volunteers
- Social media presence to drive engagement outside of our volunteer group
- One volunteer group assigned to each cafeteria every night
- Volunteer group picks up unserved cafeteria food and takes it to the assigned shelter. One cafeteria serves one shelter. Therefore, three shelters are served every night
