Approach resident at computer when asked to staff a patient
If not open; ask the resident to open note prior to precepting.
Clarify w resident the patient’s primary care provider (PCP) on the Banner Bar.
Ensure Chief Complaint is documented; Listen to case presentation from resident
Ask resident to make a commitment to a diagnosis/work up/plan for the patient.
Ask resident to provide supporting evidence for the above diagnosis/workup/plan.
Teach general rules to the resident.
-Teach an evidence-based pearl pertinent to the case
-This step may be skipped if resident performed well.
-If more information is needed -> ask resident to obtain it (ORCHID/Affinity/patient) OR (assess pt w resident) OR (expert resources).
Provide positive feedback to resident
Correct mistakes committed by resident

If not correct, direct the resident to submit a change
If “N/A” or “Empaneled, Not” and patient already established, resident -> empanelment request (NERF) to the appropriate PCP via Harbor Intranet>ELM>Empanelment.
