We have 23 pairs of chromosomes and each pair has one from each parent. Their genes do the same job, so we have two genes from each characteristic. These genes may not be the same. Different versions of the same genes are called aleles. They give cells different instructions. Chromosomes contain DNA and sections of this DNA form genes. By controlling the way ours cells behave, these genes influence our characteristics.
