Nullification/Force Bill
Political Crisis in which South Carolina tried to nullify tariffs when Jackson was in office (1832-1837)
Force Bill was formed because of South Carolina and was made so that the President was able to control the Army and Navy at his will, if necessary, to enforce the laws of Congress
Civil War
The outcome of the civil war shifted power because Slavery was abolished. More power went to the Federal Government than the State Government due to the Amendments.
The Nation gained power because of the Amendments
-13 (Abolished Slavery),
-14 (Equal Rights extended to African Americans),
-15 (African American males now have the right to vote).
The Nation now have more power than the individual states, and the states are not able to regulate voting, it is now a federal regulation.
FDR
The New Deal: It was a set of programs created as a response to the Great Depression in an effort to curb the effects of the depression and help America recover. This granted more power to the federal government because it placed national control over many of the programs that so directly affected the everyday individual. An example of this can be seen in the Federal Housing Administration, which gave power to the federal government to control standards of house construction and the ability to insure loans for home building across the country, which previously would have been left to local authorities or nobody at all.
Court Packing: this was a plan by FDR to appoint more judges to the supreme court in favor of his political views, idea was to sway the views of the court in his favor. This would give more power to the national government because it showed the president could influence important national decisions more.

Reagan/"Our Federalism"
Devolution Revolution: The transferring of responsibility of public programs and services from the federal/national level to the state level. This granted the states more power because the states now had more responsibility and were in charge of more programs, and the federal government was in charge of less programs. Shift of power/responsibility.

Gonzales V. Raich: the issue was in regard to whether or not it was still illegal (due to federal law) to produce and sell homegrown cannabis in a state even if states approve it for medicinal purposes. The decision is that yes, congress may criminalize the production and sale of homegrown cannabis even if it is legal in the state for medicinal purposes. The result of this is granting more power to the federal government because it confirms that federal laws outweigh state laws.
