The Impact of Language
naming&identity
research shows that names are more than a simple way of identification... shape the way people think of us, how we view ourselves, way we act
-
affiliation
close friends, lovers: develop set of special terms.. way of signifying relationship
convergence: the process of adapting one's speech style to match that of others whom the communicator wants to identify
-
power&politeness
powerless language: tentative and indirect word choices, hedges and hesitations
power language: direct and forceful word choices, with declarations and assertions
sexism&racism
sexist language: "words, phrases, and expressions that unnecessarily differentiate between females and males or trivialize or diminish either sex"
two ways to eliminate sexist language: 1. get rid of sex-specific terms (he, she, etc.)
- mark sex clearly... heighten awareness of whether reference is to male or female
racist language: worldview that classifies members on one racial group as superior and others as inferior
