Pollution In Downtown San Jose By: Bianca Morgan, Sravya, Courtney
Awareness
Morgan Brumm noticed an immense amount of trash accumulating and lining the gutters on her way to school as a part of my awareness excersise
Bianca saw lots of trash and a lack of trees along the street where she walked. This led her to believe that there were issues in the human environment interactions.

Analysis
Root Causes
Air Pollution http://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/global-warming/pollution/ Global Warming is getting worse and worse by day. The main causes for these are cars, planes, and power plants, because they emit carbon dioxide. Because we live in such a fast-paced and global community, people are constantly using transportation and are not actively opting for eco-friendly options (carpooling, electric cars). Carbon dioxide is the main gas that is causing climate change. Others are sulfur dioxide, mainly caused by smog and volcanic eruptions and methane, which is emitted by livestock and swamps. Example
Water Pollution https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/19/climate/arctic-plastics-pollution.html?mcubz=3 Littering is just the first step in polluting the environment. If that trash doesn't get picked up then they often get into the gutters and end up in lakes, oceans, or rivers. Trillions of plastic bits are littering Arctic waters. This can kill aquatic animals living in there by choking them. People can also be poisoned when they eat sea creatures that have ingested trash. Three percent of the ocean is covered in plastic, which is 162,810 square miles.
Air Pollution http://www.mercurynews.com/2013/05/02/santa-clara-county-receives-f-for-air-pollution/ Santa Clara received an F in pollution just a few years ago for air pollution, which shows that we use cars too much and if we don't then those cars are not fuel efficient. Another cause would be using too much electricity and avoid burning wood or trash. This affects all people living in Santa Clara because the environment we are placed in will give way to health problems in the future. In order to reverse some of this damage, we must all be conscious of habits that are harmful to the earth in order to prevent them going forward.
NoisePollution https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2017/03/these-are-the-cities-with-the-worst-noise-pollution/ In the downtown area we always hear the hustle and bustle of traffic and often sirens, police cars and fire engines, trains zooming past us, and even planes taking off. All these noises are not only an annoyance, but also can cause hearing loss, especially for growing kids and is even associates with cardiovascular disease and cognitive impairment.
Solutions
Water conservation is crucial in the effort to avoid pollution because so much water has been contaminated by pollution.
Any change, no matter how small, can be impactful, because if everyone does their part, small change adds up to big change
Climate change is a real issue that must be addressed in order to allow the planet to thrive going forward. Otherwise, the planet will most likely wipe out all living things because it is not able to support us all and regenerate on its own accord.
Noise pollution can cause health problems later on in life, making it important to impede this issue before it becomes worse with more significant effects.
Action
Direct Service
Using a reusable water bottle, cutlery, and other re-usable containers to limit your waste and inspire others around you.
-
You can actively pick up your trash and try to use as little disposable packaging/utensils etc in order to decrease the amount of trash

Discernment
Morgan Brumm acknowledges that the issue of pollution threatens the future and lives of coming generations as well as the plants and animals that we share creation with. In order to keep the planet beautiful, God is calling me to do my part in adopting conscious habits and encouraging others to do the same.
Bianca Romero feels that God is calling me to make a change in the lifestyles of humans to move towards sustainability. The fact that people are wasting without thoughtlessly their resources and using materials that are not sustainable is a fixable problem that she is determined to change. God calls me to adopt a sustainable and mindful lifestyle and to make greater change towards sustainability.
Sravya Dandamudi feels that this issue is one that people often ignore because it's is seemingly too hard to solve and too scary to ponder on. I feel that God is calling me to be more aware of the environment even when I am feeling sad/mad.
Scripture
Church Document
This document explains how prudence is crucial in our journey to a healthier planet because it will allow us to decide what is the common good. Climate change is not something to be taken lightly, and it is our responsibility as stewards to do our part in respecting the beauty that God has provided us with.
"There is an order in the universe which must be respected, and the human person, endowed with the capability of choosing freely, has a grave responsibility to preserve this order for the well-being of future generations."
Church Document
We no longer have time to debate whether or not climate change is real (CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL!) because before we know it, the earth will be too far gone to save. It is our duty to live in harmony with God's creation, meaning we must do what we can to help it become more enriched.
"An approach to ecology which respects our unique place as human beings in this world and our relationship to our surroundings."
Hebrew Scripture
Psalm 148: 5-11
God made us with the intention that we would carry out his will, thus we must fulfill our destiny, which includes taking care of others and the planet that we live on (God's creation). We are inferior to God and must do as he intends in order to make the Reign of God present in the modern world

New Testament
"Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that crawl on the earth. I give you every seed-bearing plant on all the earth and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit on it to be your food" Genesis 1: 28-29
We are not meant to abuse the resources we have been given but instead use them responsibly because God has granted us with power to be use wisely.
