Science Literacy
Effective Communication
They can discuss anything science related, whether it be controversial, something factual, or fictional.
Small Group discussion allows for the spreading of ideas through dialogue with peers.
Whole Group discussion allows for criticism, dialogue, engagement of ideas, and a chance at providing equity to all in the conversation.
Internal dialogue can pose a place to formulate ideas prior to sharing them with others.
Students can explain their thoughts, findings, or revelations regarding any science that they come into contact with.
Students question each other, published articles, or other facts that uphold the status quo.
They can read and criticize each other's work, critique data, and take positive criticism to better their understanding of the science community.
They can effectively write out their thoughts in a cohesive manner to present their ideas, findings, or facts related to their areas of focus.
They can graph their findings and display the data in varying formats.
Students can report their findings to peers and discuss the relevance of their findings with each other.
They can read, teach, write, and explain content to their peers.
Cultural & Social Understanding
Discuss science and how the science advances affect them socially.
Development of literacy using social platforms and technology developed by scientists.
Understand that the science community is ever changing and that science surrounds them daily.
Science can influence politics, the social realm, and jobs available for the future.
Understand that different cultures have different values when it comes to science.
Science influences culture and the dynamics of everyday life (inventions, homes, anything students interact with).
Manipulative Skills
Demonstrate how a system works, how to perform a procedure, or their newly discovered ideas.
They become proficient in using equipment related to the sciences and can use equipment to further their construction of reality.
Can perform experiments that further their understanding of the natural world, or phenomenon that they do not understand.
Construct models, diagrams, or data that is useful to their lab experimentation or understanding.
Calibrate equipment so that their findings are accurate and precise.
Acquisitive Skills
Students learn to listen to their peers when discussing scientific facts or opinions.
Students use their observational skills to collect data, notice phenomenon, and patterns to learn more about the surrounding world.
Students inquire about new subjects and continue to learn about science that interests them.
Students also learn to investigate, research and gather data.
Functional Skills
They can perform proper lab technique that keeps them safe, encourages learning opportunities, and allows them to inquire further about their area of study.
They develop analytical skills that make them more precise and accurate when working with tools, equipment, or peers.
Students learn the basic functions of organization and following procedural steps. They perfect them so that they become literate in the sciences and in lab skills.
Lab Skills include: Recording, Comparing, Contrasting, Classifying, Organizing, Outlining, Reviewing, Evaluating, and Analyzing
Critical Thinking & Evaluation
They can analyze, make inferences, and interpret data, figures, and graphs.
Students can evaluate and explain the scientific material they come into contact with.
Students think critically about scientific information and can determine if the information provided is valid, needs more research, or is important to the surrounding world.
Creativity
They will use their creative side to design, invent, or synthesize different products or procedures that can be utilized in the scientific community/classroom.
Students are able to use their creativity to plan ahead to cohesively build their thoughts and understandings of the science world that surrounds them.
