Effects of floods on people living in cities
Social Impacts
Injuries, spread of diseases and loss of lives
Injured by
objects and debris
washed along by
fast moving
floodwaters
Floodwaters may cause
buildings to collapse
and injure or kill people
People can suffer from
hypothermia
when they are caught in the flood for a
long period of time
Diseases
may spread and affect a
larger population
, due to the filth and waste from the sewage drains being drawn out by the rising floodwaters
Water supplies may become
contaminated
by not only
sewage water
but also
chemical spills from factories
. which may result in people contracting
dysentery and cholera.
Stagnant pools of floodwate
r may encourage
mosquitoes to breed
, resulting in more cases of
malaria, dengue fever, and possibly even ZIKA
Emotionally stressful
as people have
lost their homes
and may even be
emotionally distressed
due to the
loss of a loved one
in the floods
Homelessness
Floodwaters can cause damage to property and even sweep houses away
People may have to evacuate during floods to emergency shelters. They may even have to stay in these shelters for long periods of time after the floods while they are trying to rebuild their houses
Disruption to clean water supply
Damaged water pipes, sewage pipes may also burst and cause sewage to flow and contaminate water supplies
People have no clean water for sanitation and consumption
Economic impacts
Damage to machinery and equipment
Damage to machinery and equipment such as as drilling machines, cranes and computers.
Damage to motors and other electrical components by being submerged in floodwater
Factories are unable to operate at full capacity and suffer economic losses.
Companies lose profits and have to spend money on buying new equipment
People may even lose their jobs
Damage to transport infrastructure
Transport infrastructure such as roads and railway tracks become impassable because they may be submerged or damaged
The force of the floodwater may even be so powerful as to weaken the transport infrastructure. Cities will have to spend a considerable length of time and high costs to repair the damaged infrastructure
Rescue efforts and relief workers trying to reach the affected areas might be slowed down due to the floodwaters destroying roads and bridges
When roads are submerged or damaged due to floods, people are unable to travel to work and tourists are discouraged from visiting the city, this leads to an overall reduction in productivity, employment, and profits
Disruption of energy supply
Floods can disrupt the supply of energy by affecting its distribution , power lines may be down due to floods
Trucks are not able to transport gasoline from terminals to gas stations because of flood road conditions, the roads may even be damaged or unsuitable for use
The disruption of electricity can affect the capacity of factories and companies to produce goods and services
Power lines may be damaged and power outages may occur during the floods and these power failures may last for weeks before they are restored
Factories and companies are unable to operate due to the lack of electricity, resulting in a loss of employment and income for individuals and companies
