Owen Chase
Movie: He had expected to be a captain because Mr. Macy had promised him, but he lost it due to Pollard's good name.
Book: He was ready to be a captain, but he hadn't been promised anything.
Movie: When the ship was getting ready to sail, he helped his crew get the ship ready (he climbed up the net to fix the sail)...he seemed to do it out of frustration.
Book: He watched the crew ready the ship. It was embarrassing and frustrating, but he didn't help.
Book: On Henderson Island, he showed his bravery when he led "a preliminary scouting party" in case the island was inhabited (136).

Movie: He was a true, scary bully. He hung Nickerson over the edge of the boat while he laughed.
Book: A bully, but not as violent. Others described him as having a "Jekyll-and-Hyde transformation" (32).

Henderson Island
Book and Movie: Made mostly of rock, non-sandy beach,
Book: Upon arrival, the men are nearly too weak to walk...they had to take multiple rests and were worried about venturing out for food because they feared they wouldn't have the strength to return before nightfall.
Movie: Upon arrival, the men are still relatively strong....they work hard to repair boats and catch fish and show few signs of deterioration.

Book and Movie: Island mistaken for Dulcie Island (though in the movie it's always called Dulcie Island...they never say it was actually Henderson Island).
Book: The cave with the skeletons existed but the men didn't know about it until after their rescue (the men who stayed on the island found them).
Movie: Owen Chase found the cave with the skeletons and used it to convince Pollard that they needed to leave the island.
