The Rock Cycle

Fossil Fuels
Formation of coal: Swamps-over time sea levels rise- what was once a swamp is now under 100's of metres of water, sediment then is left behind and the process is repeated, below the surface pressure and heat cause the creation of shells and calcium carbonate. Coal is made out of dead plants and animals that were found in swamp areas.
Mangroves are a similar environment that we see in Mumbai. They provide coastal protection and harvest.
During the Mesozoic era, about 252 million years ago to about 66 million years ago, large tree ferns grew around these areas.
Oil and natural gases
Formed by fossilized plankton that did not rot due to no microbes because of very little oxygen. This eventually got overlaid by sediments that turned the gloopy plankton into oil. Process taking a million years.
Oil reservoirs:
Seismic surveys use reflected sound waves to produce a 3D image of the earths surface. This helps finding fossil fuel sources around the world.
Natural gases
Fractional distillation
Seperates crude oil according to boiling points into things such as gas and petrol. Same family of chemicals- hydrocarbons
Unique, high-energy, non-renewable.

Erosion
-
Wind is an agent of erosion and is usually effective in dry, desert environments
