PREPARATION OF SALTS
EXTRA POINTERS
salts containing water of crystallisation are called hydrated salts
salts that do not contain water of crystallisation are called anhydrous salts
general method
refers to reacting an acid with an insoluble substance (salt is soluble)
react acid with excess insoluble substance
filter to remove excess insoluble substance
heat filtrate to saturation & let it cool to form crystals
wash with cold water then dry to collect crystals
titration
refers to reacting a two soluble reactants to obtain a soluble salt
react both solutions in an exact stoichiometric quantity
heat to saturation & cool to collect crystals
wash with cold water then dry to obtain crystals
precipitation/deposition of solid
refers to reacting a solution containing the cation of the salt with a solution containing the anion of the salt to obtain an insoluble salt
mix both solutions
filter and collect residue
wash with cold water then dry to collect crystals
