Prayer and Repentance
Disease was believed to be a punishment from God, so sick people were encouraged to pray.
The sick often prayed to saints, hoping they would intervene and stop the illness.

Flagellants were people who whipped themselves in public to show God they were sorry for their sins. Popular in epidemics.
Many doctors had superstitious beliefs, e.g. some doctors used astrology to diagnose and treat illnesses.
Bloodletting and Purging

Doctor would take blood out of their body using bloodletting - they either made a small cut or used leeches.

Purifying the air
The miasma theory led people to believe in the power of purifying or cleansing the air to prevent sickness and improve health.

During the Black Death, juniper, myrrh and incense were burned so that the smoke and smell would fill the room and prevent disease.

Surgery

A wounded man was a common illustration, showing surgeons how to deal with different wounds.
However, surgeons could not do complex surgery inside the body as they didn't have enough anaesthetics and knowledge of anatomy.
